GSE = Government-Sponsored Enterprise

GSEs are financial institutions created by the U.S. Congress to:

- Support specific segments of the economy.
- Increase liquidity and efficiency in markets like housing, agriculture, and student loans.

They are privately owned, but enjoy implied government backing (not quite the same as being a federal agency).
